After Jo Koy’s disaster at last year’s Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Journalists Association certainly wants to move forward and turn the page. (I’m glad Koy enjoyed his moment, though.) For this edition, the hope rests on the shoulders of Nikki Glaser, who will be responsible for hosting the evening. Expectations are pretty low, and Glaser is a seasoned comedian: After a standout performance in last summer’s Tom Brady roast, she’s back on form. She also took care to work on her image in the pre-evening media circuit, highlighting her extensive preparation for this mission, an astute approach that highlights a striking contrast with her predecessor. Many famous faces will be there to accompany him: Viola Davis and Ted Danson will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award, respectively, and among the many presenters will be Catherine O’Hara, Colin Farrell, Rob McElhenney (but not Ryan Reynolds), Jennifer Coolidge — and Elton John!
When it comes to the prices themselves, there are a lot of things to watch out for. The competition for the Oscars is still very open, which gives the HFPA the opportunity to establish itself. Emilie Pérezcomedy par excellence, leads the way with ten nominations, a record for a musical, while The Brutalist et Conclave follow with seven and six nominations respectively. The Globes’ approach of separating the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories also results in some unexpected nominations, such as Hugh Grant for Hereticand the possibility of surprising results. We await Mikey Madison’s performance in Anorabut the HFPA’s love for The bottom could this mean a prize for Demi Moore? Will Denzel Washington surpass Kieran Culkin for Best Supporting Actor? It’s a question of politics…
As for TV, season 2 of Squid game already finds itself with a nomination for best drama series, despite its absence when the HFPA nominations were announced. Lukewarm reviews since its Dec. 26 release, plus Emmy frontrunner Shoguncomplicate the situation. The Best Comedy Series category is filled with well-established series such as Tips, The bear, Abbott Elementary Schoolet Only murders in the buildingeven if it is difficult to predict the outcome of a competition which saw Nobody wants that explode.
