After the disaster marked by Jo Koy at the Golden Globes ceremony last year, the Hollywood Foreign Journalists Association certainly wants to move forward and turn the page. (Glad Koy enjoyed his moment, though.) For this edition, the hope rests on the shoulders of Nikki Glaser, who will be responsible for hosting the evening. Expectations have been set pretty low, and Glaser is a seasoned comedian: after a notable performance in the Tom Brady roast last summer, she’s back in form. She also took care to work on her image on the pre-evening media circuit, highlighting her extensive preparations for this mission, a shrewd approach that highlights a stark contrast with her predecessor. Many famous faces will be there to accompany him: Viola Davis and Ted Danson will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award respectively, and among the many presenters will be Catherine O’Hara, Colin Farrell, Rob McElhenney (but not Ryan Reynolds), Jennifer Coolidge — and Elton John!
When it comes to the prices themselves, there’s a lot to watch out for. The competition for the Oscars is still very much open, giving the HFPA the opportunity to make its mark. Emilia Pereza comedy par excellence, leads the way with ten nominations, a record for a comedy/musical, while The Brutalist et Conclave follow with seven and six nominations respectively. The Globes’ approach to splitting the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories also means some unexpected nominations, like Hugh Grant for Hereticand the possibility of surprising results. We are waiting for Mikey Madison’s performance in Anorabut the HFPA’s love for The Substance could it mean a prize for Demi Moore? Will Denzel Washington outperform Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category? It’s a question of politics…
As for TV, season 2 of Squid Game already finds itself with a nomination for Best Drama Series, despite its absence when the HFPA nominations were announced. Lukewarm reviews since its Dec. 26 launch, plus Emmy frontrunner Shōguncomplicate the situation. The Best Comedy Series category is filled with well-established series such as Hacks, The Bear, Abbott Elementaryet Only Murders in the Buildingalthough it is difficult to predict the outcome of a competition which had seen Nobody Wants This explode.
