Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed his disappointment after his side’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Anfield.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Arne Slot’s men were unable to secure all three points, with defensive errors proving costly.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

Manchester United took the lead early in the second half thanks to a goal from Lisandro Martinez, but the home side responded, with Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah finding the net to give the Reds the lead.

Amad Diallo then equalized for United in the 80th minute, leading to a tense end to the match. Both teams had the opportunity to snatch victory in the final moments, but the points were ultimately shared on the banks of the Mersey.

Van Dijk admitted his frustration with the way Liverpool conceded their two goals, calling the defense unacceptable, lazy and reckless.

He stressed the need to improve basic defensive principles, particularly managing crosses and preventing easy scoring opportunities.

The Liverpool captain said: “I’m disappointed so far, but it could have been much worse on the last occasion.

The way we conceded both goals is unacceptable, lazy and careless, it shouldn’t happen. This is an easy cross and a tap, these are basic things we need to improve”.

They have good players and a new manager, and I don’t think they get the respect they deserve.

They made it difficult for us today and it could have worked out in their favor, but I look at my team and we should have done a lot better”, added Van Dijk.

Next up for Liverpool

Slot’s side will play the EFL Cup semi-final first leg and FA Cup third round against Tottenham Hotspur on January 8, 2025 and Accrington Stanley three days later, before traveling to Nottingham Forest on January 14, 2025 .
