For more than 40 years, although many Ministers and Secretaries of State have come to Le Creusot, few have made an official visit to the city of Pilon with the hat of Minister of National Education.
Claude Allègre is therefore an exception. It was in his capacity as Minister of National Education, Research and Technology that he made an official visit to Le Creusot.
It was in 1998 and it was at the invitation of André Billardon, then Mayor and President of the Urban Community. For the occasion, Claude Allègre came to inaugurate the University Library, located in the former crane and locomotive hall.
History will remember that this is the investment made in Le Creusot, by the Urban Community, which was the most subsidized by Europe, the State, the Burgundy Regional Council… André Billardon has never failed to recall that the rehabilitation of the Halle des Grues et Locaux, so that it became a University Library, had been an investment subsidized at more than 80%! We talked about 82%.
The arrival of Claude Allègre at Le Creusot had generated a demonstration of teachers – less than thirty – who had not digested that the Minister of National Education of the Government Jospin, had announced a few months earlier, wanting to downsize the mammoth by speaking of National Education.
