The ceremony launches an awards season in Hollywood that is once again quite unique – like all those that followed the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, moreover, the return to normal seeming more than ever a mirage for the American entertainment industry. After the shock of cinema closures in the face of the epidemic, the explosion of streaming services and the hesitant strategy of studios on the subject, the rebound in 2023 with the colossal successes of Barbie et Oppenheimer stopped dead by the strikes of actors (118 days) and screenwriters (148 days), 2024 was marked by the consequences of these social movements, which delayed productions and therefore their release.
The box office bears the mark, and Hollywood narrowly avoided disaster. In the first half, revenues were down 27.5% and the few films released by the studios continued to be flops. The second semester, with the releases of Vice-versa 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Wicked or even Beetlejuice Beetlejuicehelped raise the bar, with a total estimated at $8.75 billion for the year, down only 3% compared to 2023. But we are still far from pre-pandemic levels (11 .4 billion in 2019, 11.8 billion in 2018) and the studios are more dependent than ever on the franchises which monopolize the top 10 (in addition to the films mentioned above, there are Vaiana 2, Despicable Me 4, Dune: part 2, Twisters, Godzilla x Kong et Kung Fu Panda 4) and even the top 20, where only two original creations managed to slip in: Blue & Compagnie et Never again.
