Training resumed this weekend at RSC Anderlecht, but it immediately ended in a major setback. Jan Vertonghen is injured again. In the meantime, the club has provided further information on the situation.
The Belgian international has had a great career. With the defender facing the threat of being dropped from SL Benfica, he decided to play for a Belgian club for the first time in his professional career. In the summer of 2022, he therefore signed a two-year contract with Anderlecht, where Vertonghen quickly became an indisputable starter.
After long doubts, the now ex-Red Devil extended his contract for one season with the RSCA last summer. But he hasn’t taken advantage of it yet. Due to a lingering Achilles tendon problem, he has not played since the second day. However, a return seemed to be looming.
New injury
Just before the winter break, he returned to the selection. He was expected to be back for the second half of the season. But this weekend, things got bad again. Vertonghen had to interrupt training due to a new injury. This news was confirmed by the club itself.
Through club channels, the RSCA announced that it was an ankle injury. “The first examinations revealed an injury to the left ankle. Additional examinations must still confirm the seriousness of the injury. The injury is not linked to the previous injury,” we can read on the club website.
Fox under pressure
Vertonghen was injured when he hit his ankle during a trivial action in training. We now hope that no ligaments were affected. In this scenario, the captain would be sidelined again for a good while. And this, while the heart of the defense is already well bare. The pressure on sports director Olivier Renard to provide defensive reinforcements is therefore increasing even more
