While the real interest in Apple Intelligence is still limited according to American users (we Europeans will have to wait until April 2025), the service takes up considerable space on iPhone. Appeared with iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence now takes up almost twice as much space since iOS 18.2.

A service that takes up a lot of space

Apple’s AI came after the battle, notably behind Google, OpenAI and Samsung. While Live Translate of the Korean’s Galaxy AI suite is arguably one of the most practical AI tools on a smartphone, allowing two people speaking different languages to engage in a translated phone conversation in real time, we still wonder what really changes the daily lives of Apple customers. Playing with Genmoji is nice, but it’s not a “game changer“.

Currently, the only truly useful AI feature on iPhone is ChatGPT’s integration with Siri. While waiting for other features like real-time translation, be aware that all of this takes up space. Before the release of iOS 18.2, which brought the second wave of Apple Intelligence features, Apple said this sequel would require 4GB of storage on compatible iPhones. However, this requirement has already been increased.

With the rollout of iOS 18.2, features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and improved ChatGPT integration with Siri were introduced. Now Apple Intelligence requires 7 GB of storage. For 128GB iPhones like iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro, this means Apple Intelligence now consumes 5.5% of your device’s storage, compared to 3% previously. Conversely, models like the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which start at 256GB, offer a bit more headroom. But add to that the space occupied by the iOS system itself, and you already lose almost 20 GB…

Apple Intelligence will likely continue to eat up more and more storage over time, raising the question of a range that starts at 256 GB of storage. Remember that it also requires a minimum of 8 GB of RAM, which excludes the basic iPhone 15 in particular. The iPhone SE 4 (or iPhone 16E) should also include 8 GB of RAM to support the company’s AI.

Who can’t wait to test Apple’s AI in (or elsewhere)?
