Several members of the medical staff and prison administration are currently taken hostage in Arles prison. The perpetrator is said to be an inmate of the central prison.
The Arles prison, in Bouches-du-Rhône, is the scene of a hostage taking, we have learned Le Figaro from a union prison source, confirming initial information from Provence.
According to this same source, between two and five members of medical staff as well as a prison guard are currently being held by an inmate who may have psychiatric disorders.
Police on site
The police are on site. According to our colleagues from the regional daily, the hostage-taking has been underway since the end of the morning and the detainee is said to have armed himself with a homemade bladed weapon.
Arles prison is particularly known for having been the remand prison in which Corsican independence activist Yvan Colonna died, killed by another inmate. At the time, the former director and a supervisor were the subject of disciplinary procedures, following the opinion of the General Inspectorate of Justice.
