The UK Food Security Report (UKFSR/2024) has shone a spotlight on agricultural relations with Morocco, as well as Britain’s challenges in food production. The report prepared by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs noted an increase in imports of agricultural products from Morocco in 2023.

Morocco is thus among the largest exporters of fresh vegetables to the United Kingdom, representing alone 7.5% of the total of these exports in 2023, we read in this report which also cites Spain, the Bas, and Poland among the main exporters of these products to the United Kingdom. According to the same source, this diversification of partners has allowed the United Kingdom to strengthen its resilience in the face of global shocks, such as extreme weather conditions and geopolitical tensions.

The British report also returns to the production of fertilizers, noting that Morocco remains, alongside China and the United States, one of the largest producers of phosphate rock on a global scale. Phosphate fertilizer production fell slightly by 1.9% to reach 46.1 million tonnes between 2019 and 2022, although longer-term trends show overall growth, the document details.

The UK Food Security Report is an analysis of statistical data presented to Parliament in Westminster at least once every three years. It examines past, current and future trends in food safety to provide a comprehensive and impartial analysis of food safety in the UK. The report draws on a wide range of data published by official, administrative, academic and intergovernmental sources.

The UKFSR is designed as an independent database to inform Government, Parliament, food chain stakeholders and the general public about the data and analysis needed to monitor food safety in the UK and develop responses effective in solving problems.
