On the sidelines of the Sentry, the first tournament of 2025 on the PGA Tour, $500,000 to a charity of their choice.
Let things be clear. American players selected for the team Ryder Cup next September at Bethpage (New York) will donate their entire bonus to a charity of their choice. Xander Schauffeleengaged this week in Kapalua (Hawaii) for the Sentryfirst tournament of the 2025 season of PGA Tour (20 million dollars in endowment), confirmed it at the microphone of our colleagues from Golf Channel.
On December 16, the PGA of America officially announced that each member of the US Ryder Cup team would receive a bonus of $500,000. 300,000 would be donated to charity while the other $200,000 would be used as the player sees fit.
We are used to participating in these team events without being paid and happily giving our part
Xander Schauffele
« This large sum of money will go to charityhighlighted the double winner in Majors in 2024. We are used to participating in these team events without being paid and giving our part with joy (…) It is a very beautiful thing that we can do. We make a lot of money throughout the year, so we’re happy to give money away when we can (…) The Ryder Cup is going to be better because of this. »
A declaration which tempers a rather unhealthy climate since the last Ryder Cup won by the Europeans on October 1, 2023 in Rome. We remember that Patrick Cantlay but also… Xander Schauffele had been at the origin of a split in the US locker room with the pretext that the American players were not compensated, contrary to the Presidents Cup.
Exacerbated atmosphere in Bethpage?
This clarification also follows the comments of the captain Keegan Bradley who recalled that the decision to compensate American players was solely the responsibility of the PGA of America. He also promised that this bonus would be donated in its entirety to charitable causes.
One thing is certain, the controversy which surrounded these questions of bonuses and remuneration – which the Europeans are not demanding – will heat up the next meeting in Bethpage (September 26-28), in the great suburbs. from New York. You only have to listen to Xander Schauffele to be convinced of this.
« We’ve heard a lot of bullshit on this topic, but the way things are going is good for this great rivalry (USA-Europe). This is the best that could have happened for the Ryder Cup. Every time there is a quarrel, what happens? This energizes everything that happens around it. »
As a reminder, the European team has not won on American soil since Medina (Illinois) in 2012. Even though it has won eight of the last eleven editions, it remains with a crushing defeat in the United States. A very heavy 19-9 conceded at Whistling Straits (Wisconsin) September 26, 2021. And Xander Schauffele (photo with Brooks Koepka) was one of the “executioners”!
