Former Masters winner Trevor Immelman is the new boss of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), the men's world ranking.
Winner of the green jacket in 2008, Trevor Immelman45 years old, succeeds Peter Dawson. The South African will officially take command of the OWGR on April 10, 2025.
He will be the third director of an organization that has existed since 2004.
The appointment of the former captain of the international team of Presidents Cup at the head of the world rankings is not insignificant. The circuit war that has raged since the arrival of LIFE Golfcauses a lot of damage in the world golf landscape. LIV players, attracted by crazy sums of money, are for the vast majority of them today deprived of the Majors since the Saudi circuit does not have world points. And it is precisely the OWGR which, most often, decides on access to major tournaments.
The OWGR criticizes the LIV for its format (no cut, only three days of competition, shot gun starts). Other circuits, however, have been awarded world points since 24 of them benefit from them today, compared to only 16 when the system was created. THE PGA Tour of Taïwan (China Taipei) was thus included in the OWGR system on January 1, 2025.
Constantly evolving
The scales and the system of this classification dominated by Scottie Scheffler and of which Matthew Pavon is currently 31st have undergone many changes recently. The OWGR here seems to be in perpetual evolution.
So, since January 1, 2025, tournaments with a small field of players use a new points distribution curve, awarding a greater percentage of points to the first in these tournaments.
Although the total number of points awarded does not change, an additional 50% points are awarded to the winner.
Trevor Immelman's future decisions concerning the LIV in particular will in any case be followed very closely… Could they contribute in one way or another to accelerating the “peace of the circuits”?
“The OWGR will continue to evolve to best fulfill its role. I wish Trevor good luck, I am sure he will fulfill this role with distinction”said Peter Dawson.
“The World Golf Ranking has always been important in my professional career, I know how important it is, particularly to be among the top 50 in the world, I am honored by this nomination”assured Trevor Immelman without any other form of information on what he intends to put in place.
