Argentinian Franco Colapinto recently declared that his future in Formula 1 “is not yet sealed or confirmed”suggesting that a possibility of returning to racing in 2025 remains.
The Williams Racing driver, who is currently spending the end-of-year holidays in his native country, gave a relaxed interview on the YouTube channel “Tavo al volante”, fueling hopes of a return to the premier class after having lost his seat during the last races of the 2024 season.
“At the moment nothing is closed or confirmed, we are looking for the best option for me, an opportunity for next year”said the 21-year-old from Pilar.
Currently, the Argentinian is a reserve driver for Williams, which will start the 2025 season with the Thai Alex Albon and the newly recruited Spanish Carlos Sainzwhich arrives from Ferrari.
Williams sporting director, James Vowlesrecently revealed its plan for the development of Colapinto as a driver while awaiting a new opportunity in the category.
“We will have a historic car, a two-year-old car for Franco. He will use it a lot to gain speed”he explained.
To keep him active and in competitive rhythm, Vowles clarified that Colapinto will have regular opportunities to drive during previous car tests, recalling that this approach has already been successfully implemented by Frenchman Esteban Ocon, currently a driver for Alpine , during his reserve year at Mercedes in 2019.
Alpine could well be Franco's way out of Formula 1, if the Australian novice's performance Jack Doohan do not meet the expectations of the team manager.
Alpine's main sports advisor, Italian Flavio Briatore, reaffirmed his philosophy of replacing drivers during the season if results are not satisfactory: “If a driver doesn't improve, if he doesn't bring me results, I change him. You can't act with emotion in F1.” .
