Athlete development in Brazil is a frequently debated topic in various spheres of national football. Recently, coach Paulo Turra, multiple champion alongside Felipão, commented on this issue during the Mesa Redonda program on TV Gazeta.
During the discussion, Turra expressed his disagreement with the model adopted in Brazil, which favors tactical aspects for young players.
– Today, in the training system, do you know what is happening? From the ages of 10 to 14, the focus should be on the pitch, on scoring goals, with players enjoying football. There must be open play, they must enjoy the game. Nowadays, clubs practice tactical training and limit players to two or three touches. In this process, they should be encouraged to give their best – said Turra.
Often, last Monday, the new sports director of Flamengo, José Boto, also addressed the issue of athlete development in Brazil.

The Portuguese executive recalled the roots of Brazilian football and spoke of the “injury” of athletes confined in tactical systems.
– I think we need to return to the roots and fundamentals of Brazilian football, giving young athletes the freedom to make mistakes, to experiment, and not keeping them tied to tactical systems. In the future, they will have time for this. They changed the way players are trained in Brazil. You were successful, but you tried to copy Europe, and now you’re having trouble. Are you no longer producing as much talent as you were 10, 15, 20, 30 years ago? – asked Boto.
