Their car ends up in a creek in Moncton, two men die

Two men died Tuesday after their car ended up in a branch of the Petitcodiac River in Moncton. There are no other injuries. At the end of the morning, emergency services were still on site.

The incident occurred at street level Churchnear where the road turns into Donald Avenue, in the neighborhood of Sunny Brae. Firefighters were called around 9:20 a.m. but are not sure when the accident happened.

When they arrived on scene, the car was overturned on its roof and mostly submerged under water.

Due to where the vehicle was located, it took firefighters 30 minutes to gain access.

The swamp surrounding the stream where the vehicle ended made the operation very difficult for the fire services, who had to mobilize 16 firefighters from four of the city’s five fire stations.

The part that was difficult for the firefighters was finding a method to get to the car which was in the middle of the river so we had technicians who responded to the call who went into the river with a ladder to get to the carexplain Brian McDonaldplatoon leader with the Moncton firefighters.

Before firefighters were able to reach the car and discovered two people were inside, it was more than 30 minutes.

At this stage the incident was considered a recovery operation and no longer a rescue operationnoted Brian McDonald.

No information on the causes of the accident

According to firefighters, the car was traveling north on the street Church. For unknown reasons, the car left the road, hit the bridge guardrails and landed in the rivercontinues the platoon leader.

At least four police cars, two ambulances and four fire trucks are on scene.

In the morning, at least four police cars, four fire trucks and two ambulances were mobilized on site as well as a tow truck to extract the vehicle, which was able to be taken out of the water around 12:20 p.m.

Investigators from the GRC were still at the scene Tuesday afternoon. Brian McDonald says police deployed drones around the area to ensure there were no other injuries.
