The Grandetorte-Ahmeyime project entered the gas extraction phase on Tuesday, after the “successful” opening of the first well in the field, paving the way for the “commercialization of gas”, according to a joint press release from the Mauritanian and Senegalese Energy and Oil, Petrosen and SMH.
“The exemplary partnership with Senegal has allowed us to strengthen our capacities to achieve ambitious and sustainable common objectives,” declared Mauritanian Minister of Oil, Mohamed Ould Khaled: “I am happy to say that a promising and dynamic future awaits the entire region,” the statement said.
For his part, the Senegalese Minister of Energy, Birama Souleye Diop, declared: “The opening of the gas pipelines is a historic step,” adding that it “reflects the common vision with Mauritania through the gas project which is a model of fruitful cooperation”.
The GTA project is being developed by several companies, including the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company, Petrosen, BP and Cosmos Energy.
The Minister of Energy and Petroleum said on October 1 that gas production from the Ahmeyime field is expected to begin in early 2025.
The first gas cargo was expected to be exported in mid-2024, as previously announced by the Mauritanian and Senegalese governments.
During the first phase of operation, exports are expected to reach around 2.5 million tonnes per year, of which around 70 million cubic feet per day will be for local consumption in the two countries.
