Since 10 a.m. this Monday, December 30, around twenty firefighters have been carrying out firefighting in the town of Vaychis, in the Ax-les-Thermes valley (Ariège).
Burning, or “prescribed burning” is an ancestral agricultural technique which consists of clearing an area with fire, preparing it for cultivation.
A fire which grew over around thirty hectares. “These are prescribed burning sites for farmers,” explains Patrick Antoniotti, head of the fire and rescue center (SDIS) in Tarascon-sur-Ariège. “We did it today because the conditions were right for it : snow almost everywhere, cold temperatures with frost and magnificent sunshine. Thus, the plants dry out. At this time of year, there is no risk for the flora and fauna. he assures.
For the 2024 – 2025 season, around twenty projects are planned.
