After the Dak Mi 1 drama, construction site safety at the heart of the PM’s concerns

Hanoi, January 1 (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son signed an official dispatch from the Prime Minister on December 31, 2024, requesting urgent measures to resolve an incident at the Dak Mi 1 hydroelectric dam construction site in the province of Kon Tum, in the Central Highlands, which left three dead and two missing earlier the same day.

The document, sent to the National Civil Defense Steering Committee, the Ministers of Industry and Commerce, and Construction, and the Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, noted that around 3 a.m., scaffolding went up collapsed during nighttime construction work on the Dak Mi 1 dam.

After being informed of the incident, the Prime Minister sent his sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims.

In order to deal with this emergency situation, he asked the chairman of the provincial People’s Committee to work with the national steering committee and relevant organizations to immediately mobilize all the necessary resources to find the missing, treat the injured and implement implement preventive measures to prevent such accidents from happening again. In addition, it will be necessary to organize support visits to the families of the victims, providing them with all the necessary assistance in accordance with the regulations in force.

The Ministry of Construction was tasked with carrying out a thorough investigation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Provincial People’s Committee, to determine the exact causes of this incident. It will also be required to take immediate corrective action and implement enhanced safety protocols to prevent future accidents on construction sites. Any violation of safety rules on construction sites must be subject to exemplary sanctions.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is responsible for intensifying controls, inspections and audits in the hydropower sector, sanctioning violations in the investment, construction and operation of hydropower plants in accordance with regulations in force.
