Surprises and notable absentees: those qualified for CHAN 2025

The 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be held from February 1 to 28 in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, now knows almost all of its participants.

The last qualifying matches, played on December 28 and 29, delivered their verdict. If flagship teams like Senegal, the DRC or even Nigeria will be present, others like Ivory Coast or Cameroon will be missing.

This edition is marked by notable absences. Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, although automatically qualified, chose to withdraw. Only Morocco will represent the North Africa zone (UNAF). The host countries – Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania – had already secured their place.

North Africa on the mat

The qualifications offered historic moments. The Central African Republic obtained its very first ticket to the competition by eliminating Cameroon with a draw (2-2). Other surprises include Burkina Faso, victorious against Ivory Coast (3-2), and Mauritania, who created the feat by dismissing Mali (1-0).

Among the qualified teams are also regulars like Senegal, title holder and dominant against Liberia (3-0, 1-1), the DRC, victorious against Chad (4-2), and Nigeria, winner of Ghana (3-1).

The last ticket, reserved for the “best team in the CECAFA zone” according to CAF, should go to Burundi, Ethiopia or South Sudan.

Qualified countries:
Kenya – Uganda – Tanzania – Morocco – Senegal – DRC – Guinea – Nigeria – Mauritania – Burkina Faso – Angola – Rwanda – Central African Republic – Zambia – Niger – Sudan – Madagascar – Congo.
