“Massive replacement that is still underway”

There was a huge landslide at the Dufourspitze on the Monte Rosa massif at the weekend. There is still an acute danger to life near the massif. A mountain rescuer publishes drone footage.

There was a landslide on the Italian side of the Monte Rosa massif last weekend. Mountain rescuer Luca Tondat shows “the massive detachment that is still underway” in his drone footage, which he published on Instagram and Facebook.

The rockslide happened at night at the Dufourspitze, below the Belvedere Glacier. The mountain rescuer also advises not to go near the rockfall: “Don’t venture towards Alpe Pedriola in the next few days. The collapses continue.”

As 20 Minutes reports, local meteorologists see the unusual temperatures and the small amount of snow as the reason for the rock fall. The melting of the permafrost could also have played a role. There was a landslide on the Monte Rosa massif as early as spring 2024. (nto)
