This match is essential for the Seahawks (8-7), who are trying to qualify for the playoffs and still have a chance to win the NFC West against the Los Angeles Rams. Seattle has lost its last two games, and another defeat could eliminate them from the playoff race.

The Bears (4-11) are already eliminated from the playoffs after a nine-game losing streak, which led to the firing of their head coach and offensive coordinator. Chicago now plays the role of spoilsport.

Seahawks playoff scenarios

  • If the Rams beat the Cardinals and the Seahawks lose or tie the Bears, Seattle will be eliminated from the playoffs.
  • If the Rams win and the Seahawks lose, Los Angeles wins the division.
  • If the Rams lose and the Seahawks win, a deciding game will be held at SoFi Stadium.

Fifth tiebreaker scenario

If the Rams and Seahawks both win their games, both teams will have the same record, an identical direct split, the same record in the NFC West, the same record in their joint games and the same record in conference. The fifth tie-breaking criterion is the strength of the victory. Heading into the Week 17 game, the Rams have a slight advantage in this category.

The Rams could secure qualification this week with a victory even if the Seahawks win, provided the Vikings record 3.5 wins or more in their meetings against the Packers, Jets, Commanders, Bengals, 49ers and Browns.

If the Rams win on Sunday, the Seahawks must win to stay in the NFC West race while hoping for at least four wins from the Packers, Jets, Falcons, Lions, Broncos or Dolphins.

Other teams in the race

The Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFC South have the same record as the Seahawks heading into Week 17. For now, Tampa Bay has the advantage over Seattle thanks to a better winning percentage in conference games.
