Cases of bronchiolitis are on the rise again in a large part of France, warns Public Health France in its latest bulletin of Wednesday November 27, 2024.
“The vast majority of indicators” are increasingsummarizes Public Health France. There are now five regions which are in pre-epidemic and seven in epidemic in France during the week of November 18 to 24.
Seven regions in epidemic situations
Bronchiolitis is “an acute and contagious viral infection which affects the bronchioles (small bronchi)”, as defined on the Health Insurance website. It is characterized by coughing and rapid, wheezing breathing. This infection mainly affects children under two years of age and is seasonal.
Two metropolitan regions were already in an epidemic situation since October 21. In the bulletin for the week of November 18 to 24, Public Health France added five more regions.
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur have entered an epidemic situation.
Last week, five regions were also in the pre-epidemic phase: Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Grand Est, Normandy, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire.

“In the overseas departments and regions, Guadeloupe and Martinique have been in epidemic since S43 and Guyana since the end of July (S31),” specifies Public Health France.
More cases in hospital and in town
SOS Médecins had intervened more for cases of bronchiolitis in children under two years old, but this increase remains to be seen. “a low intensity level”. Medical procedures linked to this infection concerned more than 7% of interventions.
13.7% of emergency room visits for children under two years of age concerned cases of bronchiolitis and more than a quarter of hospitalizations. It was about 11% of emergency room visits and about 23% of hospitalizations the week before.
“Bronchiolitis indicators were increasing at a low level of intensity in week 47 in hospital on hospitalizations after passage,” notes Public Health France.
28 children hospitalized
During the week of November 18 to November 24, 28 children went to the intensive care unit due to bronchiolitis.
This represents almost a third of hospitalizations in intensive care units for children under two years old. This figure is up compared to the previous week (28.4% in S46).
Same observation for those less than one year old. 26 babies went to intensive care after being in the emergency room, or around 39% of hospitalizations in intensive care units. This was up from 36% the week before.
