Willy Sagnol: “I think there was a power cut on the bus”

The former coach of the Girondins de Bordeaux, Willy Sagnol, was unfortunately eliminated from the Euro with Georgia, by Spain. If the former Bordeaux player does not regret the course of his selection at all, he nevertheless explains that there was a refereeing error in Spain’s equalizer.

“The turning point of the match was the first Spanish goal, where our player (Otar Kiteishvili) got injured, the ball didn’t come out and the referee didn’t say anything. Morata was clearly offside on the shot (by Rodri), we can see on the image that our goalkeeper had to move to get the ball. I think there was a power cut on the bus, I don’t know. It’s a shame because at 1-0 at half-time, we would have had a few more percentages of energy. But over the whole match, Spain was much stronger. With two days less recovery, we exploded physically in the second half. It’s a shame, but we had won our European Championship before and I hope we’ll leave a good image of Georgia. The players fully deserve it.”

Then he spoke more generally about his team’s European Championship.

“It takes time to analyse what the European Championship has taught us. And today’s match taught us that with teams of this level, you always have to be one hundred percent focused. Every minute and every second. The players, the staff, the Football Association and personally, I learn from such matches. There is always a lot to learn from defeats and victories.”
