The United Arab Emirates announced this Sunday the arrest of three suspects linked to the assassination of Tsvi Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi officially residing in Abu Dhabi.

The crime, described as “terrorist and anti-Semitic” by the Israeli authorities, provoked strong reactions internationally.

A murder that shakes the Emirates

The discovery of the body of Tsvi Kogan, 28, was confirmed by Emirati authorities after a lightning investigation. According to a statement from the UAE Interior Ministry, Kogan’s family reported his disappearance on Thursday. An investigation team quickly found his remains and identified the suspects.

In a message on the X platform, the ministry reaffirmed the Emirates’ determination to preserve the security of its citizens and residents, promising a “firm” response against any threat to the country’s stability.

Israeli reactions: condemnation

In Israel, the assassination of Tsvi Kogan sparked a wave of condemnation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the incident “heinous terrorism” and promised severe retaliation. “Israel will use all legal means to ensure justice is done,” he declared during the council of ministers.

For his part, President Isaac Herzog denounced a “hateful act reminiscent of the brutality of the enemies of the Jewish people”. He also expressed confidence in the Emirates to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to justice.

A controversial representative

Tsvi Kogan was an active member of the Chabad movement, a Jewish organization known for its ultra-nationalist positions and its challenge to the right of Palestinians to territorial sovereignty.

Officially assistant to the chief rabbi of Abu Dhabi, Kogan resided in the Emirates as part of rapprochement initiatives following the Abraham Accords, signed in 2020 between Israel and the Emirates.

An investigation still ongoing

The location of Kogan’s body in the city of Al-Ain raises questions. The exact location of the murder remains undetermined, and the motives of the suspects have not yet been disclosed.

Israeli figures, including Ayoub Kara, a former minister and Likud member, have expressed concern over escalating regional tensions and called for Kogan’s remains to be repatriated for a funeral in Israel.

Repercussions on the security of Israelis in the Emirates

Following this incident, Israel reiterated its recommendations of vigilance to its citizens traveling to the Emirates. Visitors are asked to limit their travel and avoid sites associated with Israel or the Jewish community.

Since the normalization of relations between Israel and the Emirates, economic and cultural ties have intensified. However, this assassination risks shaking trust between the two nations and reviving debates on the security of the Israeli and Jewish communities in the Arab region still allied with Israel, despite the genocide perpetrated by Israel against Gaza and the bloody attacks against the Lebanon.
