2 days before the presidential election in the United States, is democracy in danger?

Two days before the American election on November 5, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are still neck and neck. In the final race, the American campaign becomes increasingly turbulent. On October 28, Donald Trump was at a meeting at Madison Square. On the menu, racist jokes, insults, racist remarks, promises of purges of his former enemies. Responding to Kamala Harris, the former president denies being a fascist: “I am not a Nazi, I am the opposite of a Nazi”. Before accusing him in turn. “She’s a fascist, all right. Even if the Democratic candidate did not qualify her opponent as a fascist, she did not fail to exploit relayed testimonies, according to which the former president admired the loyalty of Adolf Hitler's Nazi generals. Donald Trump's former chief of staff, John Kelly, described him as a man “the dictatorial approach to governing”. Just like his former chief of staff of the armed forces, Mark Milley. According to a poll, nearly one in five Republicans believe that if Kamala Harris is announced in the lead, Donald Trump will have to denounce the result and try by all means to achieve the supreme office. Moreover, the former President is already mobilizing lawyers, activists and elected officials to contest a potential defeat. Exceptional security measures are being put in place while many observers fear blocking maneuvers, legal negotiations, and even violence. Since the spring of 2023 and the first indictments against him, Donald Trump has continued to pose as the victim of a conspiracy by Democrats, an exploitation of justice, and the federal police to bring him down. For almost one in two Americans, there is a real risk of seeing Donald Trump transform into a dictator if he wins.

Autocracy on one side versus democracy? Can we really call Donald Trump a fascist? Is democracy threatened in the United States if Donald Trump wins? What does this election say about democracy in the United States? And in the world?

North Korean soldiers in Russia: a risk of internationalization of the conflict?

On Monday, the Pentagon announced that 10,000 North Korean troops were currently in Russia's Kursk region, which borders Ukraine. And 2,000 additional troops are expected to join them to support Moscow's troops. Until then, the aid provided by Moscow's allies and the West had only concerned military equipment and means of deflecting sanctions. This is the first time that a state has sent troops to directly intervene in the war in Ukraine. This strengthening of relations between Moscow and Pyongyang worries the region. With the sending of soldiers, the conflict in Ukraine has changed dimension and we can fear its internationalization. Military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang represents a “significant threat to global security”, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said on Tuesday. Since the start of the war, Ukraine's allies have withheld military aid by prohibiting the Ukrainians from using Western long-range missiles to strike military targets on Russian soil because they fear provoking a ” escalade » which would cause a dangerous extension of the conflict.

And on Thursday, North Korea fired one of its most powerful missiles with the stated objective of strengthening its nuclear deterrence: “The test firing is an appropriate military action that fully meets the objective of informing our rivals of our willingness to fight back,” Kim Jong Un said at the launch. The launch came hours after the defense chiefs of the United States and South Korea called on Pyongyang to withdraw its troops from Russia. The White House was quick to denounce this shot, worrying about the risks of destabilization in the region. “This launch constitutes a blatant violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions”declared the spokesperson for the National Security Council of the American executive, Sean Savett, in a press release. South Korea has said it is exploring the possibility of sending weapons directly to Ukraine in response. In the region, two blocs, comprising four nuclear powers, are being formed. The first brings together Russia, China and North Korea, the second South Korea, Japan and the United States. Two questions remain.

Can sending its soldiers to Ukraine change the course of the war? Why did North Korea send soldiers? Has the conflict between Russia and Ukraine changed dimensions? Should we fear that other countries will become more involved? Should we prepare public opinion for the possibility of going to war?
