The war in Ukraine changed the history of the 21st centurye century until becoming its matrix, as the conflicts of the French Revolution and the Empire were that of the 19the century and the Great War that of the 20the century. It closed the cycle of globalization. It opened the great confrontation between authoritarian empires and democracies, sealing the alliance between China and Russia while bringing Moscow closer to Tehran and Pyongyang. It shed harsh light on the nature of the tyrannies of the 21ste century, on their ambitions for power and their unlimited use of violence. It aligned the South with the autocracies, as we saw at the G20 summit in Rio. Conversely, it highlighted the vulnerability and disunity of democracies.
No one can therefore doubt that the outcome of the war in Ukraine will play a decisive role in the destiny of freedom and of Europe. However, after 1,000 days of fighting, this terrible conflict of attrition…
