A Territorial Council under high tension in Saint-Barthélemy

The Territorial Council of Saint-Barthélemy met yesterday evening, in a very tense climate, since for several months, the president of the community, Xavier Lédée, has been challenged by the political groups with whom he had formed an alliance during the last elections .

The promise of a high-voltage territorial council had been made. The promise was largely kept yesterday evening (Thursday, June 27).

While some had announced in the press a motion of no confidence against Xavier Lédée, the president of the territorial council, it was finally a request for collective resignation which was proposed at the end of the session by Romaric Magras.
The leader of the Saint-Barth d’Abord group has called for early elections to be held in order to form a new majority and thus break the political deadlock in which the territorial council has been mired for several months.

Hélène Bernier and Maxime Dessouches, both members of the Action Equilibre group, did not respond or did so by default, leaving the room noisily before the end of the session.

There is no question of resigning, of course, for Xavier Lédée and his group. The president of the territorial council also recalled that 8 of the 9 points on the agenda had benefited from a favorable vote; even unanimously.

For him, a majority of work exists. In fact, last night, failing to have found a hypothetical political majority, Xavier Lédée at least saved his seat.

However, the audience in the council chamber clearly had no interest in these internal political disputes. Several residents took the floor to express their fears about the rise in crime.

Words that resonated as a reminder of reality on an island, where until recently we could leave doors and windows open.
