SOPFEU takes stock Friday morning. The weather is favorable for the day, but good weather could bring back fire activity on Saturday. Several works are underway on the fires. The state of emergency is maintained in Port-Cartier.

SOPFEU expects little progression of the fires for the day. They could regain strength on Saturday due to the good weather. On Sunday, good amounts of rain are expected in the region (15 to 20 mm). Air quality is expected to be good for the next 48 hours.

“Despite the rain that has passed over the last few hours, smoke is still very visible on all the fires, which clearly shows that the extinguishing work is far from over,” SOPFEU said in a Facebook post.

Fires 211, 221 (Port-Cartier) and 214, 226 (Moisi River) are contained (progress temporarily stopped) thanks to Wednesday’s rainy weather. Fire 212 near the Sainte-Marguerite River is under control.

The major fire management team is stationed in Sept-Îles to coordinate operations. Aerial and ground work continues. “The complex can count on the contribution of some 280 people,” SOPFEU mentioned in a Facebook post. “Two other sections of forest firefighters and auxiliary fighters, as well as about ten specialized resources will join the complex over the weekend.”

Since Thursday noon, the ban on open fires has been lifted.
