record, audience, stakes… What you need to know about the first debate of the American presidential election

It is unprecedented in American history : Donald Trump and Joe Biden will debate this Thursday, June 27, even though they have not yet been nominated by their parties for the American presidential election. A highly anticipated confrontation in the country, which is also the first of this campaign.

On the one hand, Joe Biden, 81 ans, the current president who appeared tired, even lost, during various international summits. And on the other, Donald Trump, 78 ans, who multiplies denigrating publications on social networks, describing his opponent as a senile old man. The businessman and ex-president went further a few days ago by asking his successor to take a doping test, he suspects of being drugged before the debate. Donald Trump also has things to prove. He is no longer in his prime either, and will have to explain to the millions of Americans who will follow the debate tonight, how he intends to govern when he has just been criminally convicted. He will receive his sentence on July 11.

Commercial cuts and muted microphones

For this exceptional debate, the preparations were set like clockwork. The meeting is to take place in a CNN studio in Atlanta. The set will be quite sober, hosted by two presenters. The debate is scheduled to last 90 minutes, with two commercial breaks during which the two candidates will not be able to speak with their campaign teams. There will be no audience, and the microphone of anyone who does not speak will be cut off to avoid any cacophony.

A debate that is all the more unprecedented because it is taking place very early in the campaign, with the election scheduled for next November. Donald Trump’s official inauguration should take place in mid-July, and Joe Biden’s in mid-August. More than 60% of Americans plan to attend this exchange, 16% think the show could change their vote.
