Fatal accident with a scooter in Rennes: “I saw the impact live”

L’accident between a pedestrian and an electric scooter driver, which occurred on Tuesday June 18, 2024 in Rennes, ended dramatically with the death of the pedestrian. It was Stéphanie Cadeau, a 51-year-old festival programmer in Brittany. “A terrible loss for culture,” commented a local artist a few days later.

According to several corroborating sources, including the City of Rennes, this shock did indeed occur along the mail François Mitterrand, but not at the level of number 88.

In fact, the accident occurred precisely on a paved pedestrian area between the bus lane and the grassy area located behind the Chèques Postaux bus stop (main photo of the article, editor’s note.) which is on the odd side of the mail.

Contacted by news Rennes, a witness to the accident, who says he is “still very marked”, tells us what he saw.

“I quickly understood that it was serious”

This witness to the scene was in the middle of a discussion when he saw the accident. He remembers a “vehicle at high speed” coming down the François Mitterrand mall from the Robert Shumann bridge towards Place de Bretagne.

He adds: “I stopped someone nearby to call for help while I was with the victim and the people on the scooter. »

“They had a big scooter”

Contacted, the City of Rennes confirms to us that the accident occurred in a pedestrian zone where the circulation of vehicles, including scooters, is not authorized. However, it is not uncommon to regularly see cyclists and scooter riders circulate in this area.

As a reminder, the driver of the scooter, born in 2006, was carrying a passenger behind him at the time of the impact, which is illegal.

On the spot, they told me that they tried to shout and warn of their arrival but what I remember is that a woman died.

Still according to him, the electric scooter involved in this accident was of large caliber, that is to say powerful. “They had a big scooter with large wheels.”

As a reminder, the alcohol and narcotics tests were negative and an investigation into manslaughter is still underway, explained Philippe Astruc, Rennes prosecutor.
