The day after the home defeat against Le Mans, French champion Monaco announced that they were parting ways with their coach Sasa Obradovic, in office since 2021.
Thunderbolt in Monaco! The Roca Team, double reigning French champion, announced this Monday evening that it was ending its collaboration with its Serbian coach Sasa Obradovic. A decision which comes the day after the 74-86 home defeat during the 9th day of Betclic Elite. “Sasa Obradovic has brought rigor and worked tirelessly since the start of this human adventure in December 2021. With, at the end, two French championship titles, a Coupe de France, a Euroleague Final Four and two qualifications in play-offs on the European stage. Sasa Obradovic's name is forever inscribed in the history of the Roca Team. The managers and staff of the Roca Team sincerely thank him for the work accomplished,” wrote the Monegasque club in a press release.
The 55-year-old coach is paying for the mixed results of his club, only fifth in the French championship with six wins for three defeats, and seventh in the Euroleague with six wins for four defeats. A result which is not catastrophic, but the leaders wish to give new impetus to the team of Mike James (14.4 points on average in the Euroleague), Elie Okobo (13.7 points) and Alpha Diallo (10.5) , who has only been able to count on Furkan Korkmaz for two games, and who has still not seen star rookie Nick Calathes, injured, on the floor.
Markoishvili takes over as interim
His assistant Manuchar Markoishvili (38), former full-back for Treviso, Galatasaray and CSKA Moscow, will act as interim coach while awaiting the appointment of a new coach. A very busy schedule awaits the Monegasques in the next two weeks, with matches against ASVEL, Panathinaikos, Bourg-en-Bresse and Olympiakos. This is not the first time that Sasa Obradovic and Monaco have separated, as this had already been the case in June 2020 after a season and a half at the head of the Roca Team. He then joined Red Star Belgrade, his favorite club, before returning to the Rock at the end of 2020 following the dismissal of Zvezdan Mitrovic.
