Generally immersed in an environment favorable to the consumption of alcohol or tobacco, which are also omnipresent for example within the family, school, friendly or other environment, young people are influenced by societal codes.

As reported by “Libération” this Tuesday, June 25, a recently published report from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that alcohol killed 2.6 million people in 2019. That is to say 4.7% deaths, that year, internationally.

Interesting figures to analyze

At the global level, alcohol causes 1 in 20 deaths every year. This includes road accidents, violence, abuse, illnesses and disorders.

Three quarters of these deaths are also men. « Substance use seriously harms individual health, increases the risk of chronic illness and mental illness, and tragically results in millions of preventable deaths each year.regretted Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO, in a press release.

The study also points out “a certain reduction in alcohol consumption and related illnesses since 2010 worldwide”. Although a slight decline has been reported in recent years, “health and social ills due to alcohol abuse remain unacceptably high”, according to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who asserts that young people are disproportionately affected.

Indeed, in 2019, the highest proportion of deaths attributable to alcohol concerns the 20-39 year old age group, with 13% of deaths. That same year, 209 million people were addicted to alcohol, or 3.7% of the world population.

However, a drop in individual annual consumption was noted to 5.5 liters in 2019 compared to 5.7 liters nine years earlier. With 9.2 liters of alcohol per year on average, Europe has the highest levels of consumption.

South America and United States and arrive in second position with 7.5 liters. In countries with a Muslim majority, in the Middle East, Asia or even North Africa, alcohol consumption is the lowest, we learn.
