The Senegalese government recently announced a series of economic measures intended to reduce financial pressure on households. Among the initiatives taken, emphasis is placed on reducing the prices of several basic necessities and improving access to housing.

In a decree published on June 24, 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce clearly defined the new prices for consumer goods. This decree sets the ceiling prices for refined palm oil, ordinary broken rice, crystallized sugar, wheat flour, bread and cement in the Dakar region.

For refined palm oil, the price is set at 18,500 FCFA per 20 liter drum at the ex-factory or import level, with a slight increase up to 19,000 FCFA per 20 liter drum for retail sales. Ordinary broken rice is now priced at 375,000 FCFA per tonne ex-factory or imported, with a retail price of 410 FCFA per kilogram. Crystallized sugar is set at 558,000 FCFA per tonne for local production and 566,000 FCFA per tonne for import, reaching 600 FCFA per kilogram at retail.

Regarding wheat flour, the price for a 50 kg bag of type 55 baking flour is 15,200 FCFA, while improved baking flour costs 15,700 FCFA per 50 kg bag. For bread, prices vary according to weight: 50 FCFA for a 60 g loaf, 100 FCFA for 115 g, 150 FCFA for 190 g (standard format) and 200 FCFA for 230 g.

  • Distributor price: 71,000 FCFA / ton
  • Price per 50 kg bag: 3,550 FCFA

The price of cement, essential for the construction sector, is set at 65,000 FCFA per tonne ex-factory, with a distributor price of 71,000 FCFA per tonne, or 3,550 FCFA per 50 kg bag.

These measures aim to protect consumers by ensuring affordable prices for basic products. Outside of Dakar, prices may be increased to cover transport costs, according to the decisions of the Regional Consumer Council.

Merchants must clearly display these prices, and any violation of the new regulations will result in sanctions in accordance with current legislation. The Director of Internal Trade is responsible for ensuring the application of these measures.
