The forest fire which had been going on since Wednesday in the MRC of Côte-de-Gaspé is finally under control, according to SOPFEU.

Firefighters from the Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU) had been working since Wednesday afternoon to put it out once and for all.

The fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. in the York River area, southeast of the municipality of Murdochville. It covered a total area of ​​0.3 hectares in total.

Two air tankers went to the site to water with an aeropointer. We also had a ground team in place. They managed to contain the fireconfirmed this morning Isabelle Gariépy, prevention and communications officer for the SOPFEU.

Efforts were made throughout the day Thursday to bring the fire under control. The last work that is done after a fire is brought under control is extinguishing work by our ground teams who will ensure that there is no more smoke remaining, no more heat sources that could reignite [le brasier]popularizes Ms. Gariépy.

Several factors could have caused this fire, including lightning.

Ban in force

Around 12 p.m. Thursday, the risk of fire was considered extreme throughout the Gaspé region. There SOPFEU therefore calls on the population to exercise caution.

A ban on making open fires in or near forests is now in force. The entire Gaspésie is targeted, in addition to a portion of Bas-Saint-Laurent and part of the Côte-Nord.
