“It was the neighbors who raised the alarm.” Around 7 p.m. this Tuesday, November 12, 2024, a suspicious odor, which emanated from the site of the former Société Aveyronnaise de Métallurgie (SAM), worried the neighborhood. Around fifteen firefighters responded to the scene urgently.
On site, the company in charge of demolishing the building was burning plastic waste when the fire began to intensify, according to our colleagues from La Dépêche du Midi. The employees were finally able to put out the fire using fire extinguishers. The rescuers who arrived shortly after ensured that no further fire could break out. The building is out of danger this Tuesday evening. Once again the site is unlucky.
A site in conversion
Already last Thursday, July 11, when the Occitanie region had finally signed the final act of sale of the industrial site, the celebrations had lasted no more than a few hours. The same evening, an episode of hail damaged the roof of the site.
For many months now, the Economic Development Agency (Ad'Occ) and the Regional Development and Construction Agency (Arac) have embarked on the marketing of the site with the objective of allowing one or more companies to reinvest the places. At the same time, work is being carried out on a site which is still awaiting conversion.
