Apple wants thinner iPhone 17, Apple Watch X and MacBook Pro

Last month, we almost forgot with WWDC 24 which has just passed, Apple unveiled its thinnest product to date with the very latest iPad Pro M4. Measuring 5.1mm, the 13-inch iPro Pro M4 is even thinner than the iPod nano, which was 5.4mm. Even more astonishing, the 13-inch model is even thinner than the 11-inch variant (5.3 mm).

Well, good news, Apple reportedly plans to apply the same treatment to the rest of its product line, making the iPhone, Apple Watch and MacBook Pro significantly thinner.

In the latest Sunday edition of “Power On,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the new iPad Pro M4 is the “beginning of a new category of Apple devices” whose goal is for these products to be “the thinnest and most lightest” on the market.

Our colleague thus corroborates the report of The Information, saying that the iPhone 17 lineup will include a new model with an all-new design that is significantly thinner than current iPhone designs. He adds that Apple is working on new versions of the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch that are refined compared to the current generation models:

I’m told that Apple is now focused on developing a much thinner phone in time for the iPhone 17 line in 2025. The company is also working on making the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch thinner. The goal is for the latest iPad Pro to mark the start of a new class of Apple devices that are expected to be the thinnest and lightest products in their class in the entire tech industry.

Something to dream about, with significant changes that will reverse the trend of recent years, namely offering ever larger, thicker and heavier iPhones. With the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple has initiated the beginnings of change, with a lighter and slightly more compact device.

The other major change expected next year concerns Face ID, which should be reduced, or even go under the screen, at least on the iPhone 17 Pro.

MacBook Pro

On the MacBook Pro side, the laptop became thicker and heavier during its latest redesign in 2021, with the M1 Pro/Max chip. This redesign corresponded with the MacBook Pro’s transition to Apple Silicon architecture, as well as the return of ports such as MagSafe, HDMI, and an SD card slot.

Apple Watch

Finally, the Apple Watch. For Gurman, who has already reported on the redesign of the Apple Watch We are talking about a thinner, lighter and redesigned case. There is no doubt that the Apple Watch Ultra will be a source of inspiration for the base model.

Regardless, the iPad Pro M4 does indeed mark the beginning of the new generation of devices at Apple. Let’s just hope that this doesn’t affect performance or durability.
