The different types of chargers:
Before making the right choice, you must first take an overview of what is available on the market. It is thus possible to afford a standard charger, with a USB-A port and a power of less than 20W and offering fairly slow chargingor a more powerful USB-C model (from 20W according to Apple criteria) in order to benefit from fast charging, allowing you to charge an iPhone 8 or newer from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes.
If you prefer wireless charging, there are also two power levels. Basic models can charge an iPhone at 7.5W, while MagSafe or Qi2 certified models reach 15W. This is called fast wireless charging.
In addition to wireless charging, there are also chargers for specific useslike a car charger, or a battery for portable charging.
Standard load
Slow and archaic models in 2024
If you still have chargers with a 5/10/12/18W USB-A or USB-C port, you will be able to charge your devices, but with insufficient power for fast charging. In 2024, very few models are still available, and for good reason, in addition to being slower (but your batteries won’t really last much longer), they are neither more compact nor really interesting in terms of price. Plus, many modern chargers are powerful enough to charge your other devices, like an iPad or Mac, and sometimes offer multiple ports.
If, however, you want a USB-A model of less than 20W, Apple’s official 12W power adapter is still available. At 20 euros on sale, you will certainly not get a deal, as you can see below.
In other words, and unless you already have one of these models in the bottom of a drawer and absolutely don’t want to load faster, forget about standard chargers and go straight to fast charging.
Fast charging
Saving time/charge in an emergency
There’s nothing more unpleasant than absolutely needing to leave and having to wait while your device refuels. With a fast charger, you’ll be able to get 50% battery in 30 minutes, but you’ll also gain enough battery life to last a few precious hours much faster than with a standard charger. For example, recent iPhones can accept up to 27W with a suitable model.

- A USB-C to USB-C or Lightning power cable depending on your model
Once you have decided on a fast charger, you still have to make your choice among the numerous references on the market. One of the key points is whether you want a model with a single port, or multiple ports, allowing multiple devices to be charged simultaneously.

Practical charging
Wireless charging has the main benefit of simplifying life by allowing you to quickly place an iPhone on the charger, and pick it up just as quickly before leaving. Placed in a strategic location, a wireless charger can provide great comfort, which I have enjoyed on a daily basis for many years now, without my batteries aging faster than with wired charging. iPhones work with any model on the market, but will be limited to 7.5W, unless you choose a MagSafe or Qi2 certified model, as we will see below.
You can opt for a simple charging mat, or even for an inclined model which will allow you to see your notifications while chargingfor example when you are working.

Fast wireless charging
If you want to combine the practical side of wireless charging while stocking up on energy as quickly as possible, you will have to opt for MagSafe or Qi2 certified models.
These two technologies are very similar, both offer wireless charging at 15W and offer a magnetic system to ensure the smartphone is properly placed. Indeed, the magnets on the back of compatible iPhones (from iPhone 12) and on MagSafe and Qi2 chargers allow the coils to be aligned and thus charge more quickly while reducing losses.
