The arrival of rain and favorable wind directions brought some relief to residents of Churchill Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador, who are threatened by a forest fire a few kilometers from one of the most large power plants in North America.

“We are finally getting a little cooperation from Mother Nature,” said the province’s premier, Andrew Furey, during an update on the situation carried out Wednesday afternoon.

The winds that blew in the last hours helped move the fire, which is three kilometers from the municipality, away.

The intensity of the fire also decreased from a Category 6 fire to a Level 2 or 3 classification, which indicates the presence of open flames and hot spots.

As for the power station, whose workers were evacuated on Tuesday, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro continues to monitor the situation.

Residents of the Labrador West region, near the border with Quebec, have had to deal with power outages due to problems on the power lines at the Churchill Falls generating station.

“Fortunately, Hydro-Québec was able to supply electricity to Labrador City from Fermont,” underlined the Prime Minister, who specified that power was now restored to all customers.
