Cars and trash cans, as well as a France Travail agency, were set on fire during the night from Saturday to Sunday in Cherbourg, in the neighborhood where the 19-year-old killed on June 9 by a police officer came from, we learned from the prefecture.

“On the night of June 15, 2024, between midnight and 3:30 a.m., a group of several dozen people caused localized fires in the Provinces district,” the prefecture said early Sunday morning in a press release, adding that mortar fire had been directed against the police and emergency services.

“During these incidents, significant damage was committed against a France Travail agency. Around fifteen light vehicles were set on fire,” continued the same source.

“The results of these events show 3 injuries for the national police and 2 arrests,” according to the prefecture, which had set up a departmental operational center (COD).

In the press release, the prefect condemns “with the greatest firmness these acts of violence and vandalism”.

On the evening of June 9, Sulivan, 19, was fatally shot in the chest while attempting to escape on foot from a traffic stop of the stolen vehicle in which he was traveling as a passenger.

The police officer who fired the shots was indicted on Tuesday for intentional homicide and placed under “strict” judicial supervision and was therefore not incarcerated, according to the prosecution.

After a white march on Wednesday which brought together around 600 people, a rally in front of the Cherbourg judicial court took place on Saturday at the call of Sulivan’s family to demand the official’s placement in pre-trial detention.

The night from Monday to Tuesday had already been marked by some scenes of “urban violence” in Cherbourg, the Manche prefecture had indicated on X.
