Today, two astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Matt Dominick will leave the International Space Station (ISS) for a mission lasting several hours. For space enthusiasts, it will be the opportunity to monitor in real time operations carried out outside the station. Here’s how not to miss anything from this event.

How to follow the mission live?

NASA will begin its live broadcast from 12:30 p.m. French time, but Dominick and Dyson will begin their outing from 2 p.m.. For the latter, adorned with the distinctive red stripes of her suit, this will be her fourth escapade beyond the threshold of the orbital station. On the other hand, for Dominick, dressed in an outfit without any markings, it will be the first time that he crosses the borders of the ISS.

This operation will last six and a half hours, and will be broadcast in its entirety on multiple platforms, allowing spectators to witness each key moment in real time. Whether on NASA+, NASA Television, via the NASA mobile application, the agency’s YouTube channel (see video below) or its dedicated website, the curious will have the opportunity to follow the astronauts’ every move. Thanks to the deployment of several cameras outside the ISS, the spectacle promises to be exciting.

In addition to the images, a live audio feed will allow you to hear all communications between the astronauts and the mission control center on the ground. NASA will also provide live commentary to help viewers understand the different stages of the mission.

A mission of critical importance

The main objective assigned to the astronauts will be replacing a faulty electronic box, a radio frequency unit, installed on one of the communication antennas on the starboard truss of the ISS. This is essential to ensure communications between the space station and the ground control centers. If it is not replaced, it could seriously disrupt the operations of the ISS as well as the safety of the crew on board.

Alongside that, they will be responsible for collecting samples of microorganisms present on the outer surface of the orbital station. This harvest will contribute to the advancement of research aimed at unraveling the mysteries of the survival and reproduction of these organisms in orbit.

This operation is only the first in a series of extravehicular outings planned in the coming weeks, two others are already planned for June 24 and July 2. The last such incursion organized by NASA dates back to November 2023, while Russian cosmonauts from Roscosmos already carried out one in April this year.
