Thesis subject (carried out within CRULH): Police, protesters and violent demonstrations. A history of street protests in Belgium (1965 – 1985)
Factual: What did your thesis topic consist of?
Carried out jointly between the University of Liège and the University of Lorraine, my thesis studies the evolution of street demonstrations and crowd policing since the 1960s in Belgium. She seeks to understand the interactions between police officers and demonstrators and the causes of violence during demonstrations in a context of significant social protest. By mobilizing police archives and interviews, my work is situated between history and sociology. I showed the specific evolution of crowd policing in Belgium, which, while initially assimilated to the French case, then developed a different approach based on de-escalation.
