What is the origin of the fire which ravaged 600 hectares in the Maures massif?

The fire in the Var which ignited more than 600 hectares in the Maures massif is now ” fixed “ according to the firefighters. This means that it is contained within a perimeterdespite potential outbreaks of flames in places and depending on the weather.

Now eyes are turning towards cause of this forest fire and the first avenue of investigation would be that of a human-caused accident.

A metallic object causing the spark

According to Pierre Couttenier, the prosecutor of Draguignan : » A tractor clearing brush may have hit a metal object, this incident causing sparks and a fire. Further assessments will be launched to confirm the origin of this disaster which spread in the commune of Vidauban,” he added.

65 people evacuated, but no serious injuries

Despite the scale of the fire, no houses were damaged or destroyed and no residents were injured by the flames.

However, two firefighters were slightly injured during a fall. They were visited by a doctor on site and remained with their detachment.

Sixty-five people living in hamlets near the fire had been evacuated overnight before returning to their accommodation on Wednesday morning.
