More than half of the ultra-processed plant-based products analyzed in the research were breads, pastries, brioches and cakes.

“Many foods that do not contain animal-based ingredients, such as cookies, chips, candies and soft drinks, are technically of plant origin, but would not be considered essential in the context of a healthy diet,” he added.

These products represented only 0.5% of all foods included in the report.
