Francesco Bagnaia has won ten of the 19 main races already contested in MotoGP so far in 2024. However, due to the Sprint races, he is 24 points behind leader Jorge Martín (Prima Pramac/Ducati) with one round remaining.
Even if there were only main races, the Italian might not be champion (he would have 24 points more than the Spaniard). Loris Reggiani defends a greater percentual difference in points.
In an interview with ZamTuve, the former pilot affirmed that this type of situation is not even unprecedented: 'Someone who wins ten races cannot lose to someone who has won three. Marco Melandri, who won five races, should not lose a World Championship to someone who didn't even win one [dans les 125cc en 1999]’.
According to Reggiani, the differences between the points should be greater: 'In my opinion, a certain difference, especially in such a long championship of more than 20 races, I think in the future there should be three differences. So, maybe Martín would have won the same way, but I don't like such a small percentual difference between first and second. Among other things, something weird and wrong in my opinion is that in the Sprint there is more percentual difference between first and second than in the main race, and I don't understand why’.
