The conflict in Ukraine seems to be taking an unexpected turn. For the first time, kyiv will have to face North Korean soldiers. For several months, the latter were trained by Russia, which recently signed a mutual defense treaty with Pyongyang.
According to Volodymyr Zelensky, around 11,000 North Korean soldiers are currently in the Kursk region of Russia, explains The Parisian. “We see an increase in the number of North Koreans near the front but no increase in the reaction of our partners,” deplores the Ukrainian president who mentions “a new chapter of instability in the world”.
“Until Victory Day”
Since the start of the war in 2022, Russia and North Korea have maintained close relations. The West also accuses Kim Jong-un of having had shells and missiles delivered to the Russian army. This Monday, the head of North Korean diplomacy also assured that her country would be alongside Moscow until“on Victory Day”.
Still according to our colleagues from Le Parisien, a Ukrainian official estimates that five units, each made up of around 3,000 soldiers, could soon be sent to the front, once their training is completed.
