The average milk price increased only very slightly in the 27-member European Union, between February and March 2024, since it increased by 0.70 euros per tonne. On the other hand, it is 7.7% lower than its level in March 2023.
The European Commission anticipates a moderate drop in the average milk price in April 2024, to €463.10/t (–0.2%). As for organic milk, the average price stands at €531.00/t on average in the European Union in March 2024, i.e. €3.00 more than in February.
Rebound in Belgium
In France, the price of milk continues to fall while remaining above the European average. It stood at €465.70/t in March 2024, a drop of 2.70 euros compared to the month of February. The decline is expected to continue in April, with an average price of €462.60/t anticipated by the European Commission. As a reminder, this is the average price paid to producers, including conventional, organic and AOP milk.
Among some of our European neighbors, the trend is upward. In Germany, the price of milk increases slightly from one month to the next. It stood at €459.20/t in March, or 3.90 euros below the European average. In Belgium, the price would have rebounded by almost €28.00, reaching €466.10/t. In the Netherlands, the March price gained 5.00 euros compared to February to stand at €465.00/t.
The lean powder stabilizes
On the fat market, the European price of butter continues its progression that began in the last quarter of 2023. It stood at €5,630/t at the end of March and at €6,090/t at the last European quotation. from May 26, 2024.
For its part, the price of lean powder is stabilizing after the slow decline that has taken place since the beginning of January. It stood at €2,390/t at the end of March and reached €2,440/t at the end of May 2024.
The price of whey powder, the main co-product of cheese making, stood at €770/t at the end of February. It rose to €780/t at the end of May.
