NARRATIVE – She was however described as gentle and professional. Last year, the English nurse was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of seven newborns and six attempted murders. This Monday, she appeared again for attempted murder of an infant in February 2016.

“We couldn’t keep him safe in the hospital. He should have been safe there.” Before the jurors on August 21, the mother of one of Lucy Letby’s little victims spoke. Her son, whose identity is carefully protected, narrowly escaped the tragic fate of the infants under the care of this English hospital nurse Countess of Chester, south of Liverpool. Seven years ago, she had tried to kill him by injecting air into his vein and shoving a nasogastric tube down his throat. This was his modus operandi.

Around ten newborns, if not more, were victims of the one we nickname “Angel of Death”. However, there was nothing to suggest that this ordinary nurse could do the unthinkable. On August 21, 2023, the nurse was sentenced to irreducible life imprisonment for the murder of seven of them and six attempted murders. Since then, police have said they are looking into the admissions of babies in her care since the start of her career. That’s around 4000 files.

This Monday, June 10, she appeared in court again for the attempted murder of an infant in February 2016. If her sentence cannot be increased – it is already the heaviest sentence that exists in France or the Kingdom -Uni – this trial could be an opportunity to discover a little more about the enigmatic personality of this young woman and the reasons for her action.

On the surface, Lucy Letby was a serious, ordinary nurse

On the surface, Lucy Letby is quite ordinary. Pale complexion, straight blond hair falls on his shoulders. It is neither too big nor too small. After a childhood described as ordinary – apart from the fact that she almost died during her birth on January 4, 1990 – Lucy decided to study nursing, having been passionate about health and children since adolescence. The only daughter of a financial director and an accountant, she is the first in her family to become a graduate.

Once graduated, she joined the hospital in 2012 Countess of Chester. There, her colleagues portray her as a conscientious, hardworking, competent, confident and professional nurse. She is mostly appreciated by the team. Some, however, mention its “air of superiority”. On a personal level, her lifestyle is rather healthy: single, she goes out with her friends in the evening, she takes salsa lessons once a week and goes on vacation to Ibiza.

Everyone was far from suspecting that, behind this angelic face, hid a much darker personality.
