Iran’s supreme leader on Saturday threatened Israel and the United States with a “crushing response” in the event of attacks against Iran and its allies.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke as Iranian officials increasingly threaten to launch a new attack on Israel following the Oct. 26 attack on the Islamic Republic, which targeted military bases and other sites and killed at least five people.
Any new attack by either side could drag the Middle East, already weakened by the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and by Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon, into a regional conflict of on a larger scale, just before the American presidential election this Tuesday.
“The enemies, whether it is the Zionist regime or the United States of America, will certainly receive a crushing response to what they are doing to Iran, the Iranian nation and the resistance front,” he said. Khamenei said in a video broadcast by Iranian state media.
The supreme leader did not specify the date of the threatened attack, nor its scale. The US military operates throughout the Middle East, and some of its troops are currently in Israel where there is a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile battery.
