In mid-March, a judge considered that there was not sufficient evidence of a “conflict of interest” linked to the intimate relationship of prosecutor Fani Willis with an investigator (Nathan Wade) that she hired in this case. The judge, however, concluded that there was “an appearance of inappropriate behavior” and denounced a “tremendous lack of judgment” on the part of the prosecutor. He therefore demanded that she withdraw from the case, with her entire team, or that this investigator withdraw. It was ultimately the latter who resigned a few hours later.
The Georgia trial is one of three criminal proceedings (along with the federal trial in Washington and Florida) against the former president that have not yet begun. No date has yet been set.
Last week, Donald Trump became the first former US president to be criminally convicted. A New York jury found him guilty of all 34 counts on which he was being tried. He will receive his sentence on July 11.
