The new gold investment? Buy a Kelly bag or a Cartier watch

You can invest in stocks, bonds or even private equity… but also in a luxury bag or a fine jewelry watch. In this market, investors are multiplying. And combine the pleasure of wearing a precious piece with performance. Advice from an expert to get started.

Treat yourself to a Birkin from Hermès or a Cartier watch, wear it for a few years, resell it and make a capital gain to reinvest… The idea of investing in luxury is so attractive that it seems to promise to combine pleasure and good investment. Really ? “Always,” replies Osanna Orlowski, co-founder of the second-hand luxury site Collector Square, “it’s even more of an investment value than a speculation.” Of course, a good way to keep your money safe, not necessarily to make it grow.

And yet, the values of many luxury pieces continue to increase. On the second-hand market, the price of a Kelly bag has increased by 188% over ten years; that of a Birkin by 197% in fifteen years, going from €9,868 on average in 2018 to €14,934 in the first quarter of 2023. The same goes for watches, notably at Cartier – la Panthère, sold for €4,550 in 2005, reached €10,580 in 2023.

Always more desirable… therefore profitable

“The continued increase in new items and regular reissues contribute to the dynamism of the second-hand market. Demand, greater than supply, should continue to increase the desirability of the pieces.” For clients, this means safe and often profitable investments, but also liquid: in a booming market, we sell more and more quickly and easily.

With a low risk of making a mistake, as the market focuses on iconic pieces. Birkins and Kellys from Hermès and also Chanel bags (we can favor exotic skins, rare since the house no longer produces them) or limited editions of Louis Vuitton bags, created with artists. “In watchmaking, we will turn to Rolex, Cartier, Patek Philippe,” advises Osanna Orlowski. In jewelry, Cartier remains essential, followed by Van Cleef & Arpels then the other houses on Place Vendôme. We also note the rise of vintage, with the search for jewelry that is rarer and more original than the recent creations of jewelers.”
