Faced with the risk of flooding, this town in Val-de-Marne is increasing its green spaces

The town hall of Villeneuve-le-Roi (Val-de-) intends to develop six new green spaces on its territory which have all the advantages of parks in terms of equipment and entertainment for the population but which have also another use. They can in fact collect excess water in the event of severe weather and thus limit the risk of flooding in the municipality, explains Bleu this Wednesday.

The city already has three of these parks. “If there is really a lot of water, it all flows into the park, which is hollow,” explained Mayor LR Didier Gonzales. It is a sort of retention pond converted into a public garden. » However, the city’s flood prevention system does not stop there.

The vegetated surface area has been increased

The vegetated surface area has been increased thanks, among other things, to open spaces around the trees, a de-artificialized roundabout, tar coverings replaced by loose paving stones allowing water to infiltrate or by water-absorbing grass such as a sponge. The town hall thus intends to avoid a repeat of a major flood like the one experienced by the municipality in 2016.
